Exploring South America

South America's geography, history, anthropology, archaeology, economy and political science are woven into sixteen lessons aimed at the interests and abilities of students in the intermediate and junior high school grades.

Students will explore: Machu Picchu,"The Lost City of the Incas," Potosi, the richest deposit of silver ever found in the world, isolated Indian villages along the bank of the mighty Amazon River, jagged snow-capped peaks of the Andes Mountains, Chuquicamata, an open-pit copper mine in the Atacama Desert, the Strait of Magellan, Tierra del Fuego, Lake Titicaca, the Altiplano, modern capital cities, busy ports, ranching, farming, and mining areas, as well as the Galapogos Islands.

Host: Donna Matson, teacher and producer, spent many months in South America filming and gathering material for this social studies series. She was a classroom teacher for eleven years, teaching in California, Hawaii, Morocco, and Lebanon, and has traveled extensively through Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and South America. Miss Matson graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara, and holds a B.A. Degree in Elementary Education, an M.A. Degree, and an Administrative and Supervisory Credential.
