EnviroMysteries

1 Thirty-Minute Program
Grade(s):  7 - 12
Curriculum:  Environmental Health

Strange things are happening in your environment. A mysterious outbreak of cholera. A batch of suspicious respiratory illnesses. Rumors of heavy metal contaminants. What can you do?

Well, if you're part of the Earth Watch Team, you grab your camera and your reporters' notebook and start investigating. These teen reporters are the faces behind EnviroMysteries, a new dramatic series produced by Maryland Public Television. When the Earth Watch team attacks an environmental mystery, you can expect dogged attention to detail, clear reporting, and innovative on-camera reports that will astound even the MTV generation. And when they get hold of a story, they won't back off until it's solved - even if it means putting their own friendship on the line.

• Multicultural and believable cast members make science and scientific investigation live for the audience with realistic, fast-moving story lines that involve the audience in solving the mystery for themselves.

• Earth Watch documentaries explain complex scientific processes in audiences' own terms, using their everyday metaphors to bring the point home.

• Active involvement of the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health assures scientific integrity for the series, whose pilot was developed under a grant from the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences.

Teacher Guide:  Exciting ONLINE COMPONENTS and comprehensive teachers' materials and services extend EnviroMysteries depth and utility.
