From The Brothers Grimm, a series of thirteen live-action programs designed to stimulate interest in the rich cultural heritage of folktales. The series brings to life such universal characters as Hansel and Gretel and the Frog King in American settings, offering classroom audiences themes which have survived for generations. The series also provides a way for students to examine essential elements of critical thinking and literature.

Ashpet: An American Cinderella -Set in the rural South in the early years of World War II, Ashpet is a humoruously touching version of Cinderella, the world's most popular folktale. 3 programs (19:32/19:20/19:23)

Soldier Jack - This tale follows Jack, a WWI veteran, who trades an act of kindness for two magical gifts: a sack that can catch anything and a jar that can show whether a sick person will recover or die. Jack becomes a national hero when he rescues the President's daughter from a serious illness by capturing death in his magic sack. However, after many years, Jack realizes he has upset the natural order in the world and releases Death to save humankind from perpetual old age and misery. 2 programs (20:30/19:47)

Jack and the Dentist's Daughter - Black actors re-enact a variant of the Grimm's comic story, "The Master Thief," in a small 1930's American town. Jack, a poor laborer's son wants to marry the dentist's daughter, but the dentist insists that he earn money first because he does not want him to marry his daughter. Jack suceeds in meeting all challenges making for some amusing actions.

Bearskin, The Man Who Didn't Wash for Seven Years - After making a pact with the devil, a former civil war soldier is given unlimited riches, but he will loose his soul unless he wears a bearskin and goes without a bath, haircut, shave, or manicure for seven years. The Devil is forced to renege after the soldier opens his heart to another's suffering and wins the hand of a beautiful maiden.(19:24)

The Goose Girl - This ancient tale of mistaken identity, endurance and the triumph of virtue through honorable means is translated to this 17th century tale(19:23)

Rapunzel, Rapunzel - Rapunzel imprisoned in a tall tower by a witch, allows a young man to climb her long brown hair by cascading it down to him. The witch discovers this and cuts off her hair and blinds the young man. He wanders for many years until he is healed by Rapunzel's tears.(18:00)

Bristlelip - A comical tale focusing on the importamnce of empathy and kindness was adapted from the tale " King Thrushbeard" and focuses on a young haughty heroine who is forced to work as a kitchen maid in the home of one of her rejected suitors(19:18).

Hansel and Gretel - This classical tale of two parents too poor to keep their children, take them to the woods and "loose" them. The story features their episode with the witch and their return home.

The Frog King - The Making of the Frog King - An upper class late 19th century dining room where a wealthy industrialist presides as king and sets the stage for this classic tale about a princess' promise to a frog. The frog invites himself to a formal family dinner and proceeds to embarass the princess with his antics. Director Tom Davenport narrates the making of the Frog King.(19:20)
